Baskets of vegetables were allocated a space of eight sq.ft for all the exhibits, on the same table as Turf which had sixteen sq ft ( there were only two entries)
We grow lots of different herbs, but Sage Rosemary and parsley won out. |
Ours are the ones with the blue card. |
one was a table arrangement, one miniature arrangement and one for our Dahlias, and four out of five firsts for my jams.
I was especially pleased to get a first in the craft section for my Faberge egg.
What we both found surprising was the cheating! The rules state that produce and flowers must be grown by the exhibitor, yet there were lettuce clearly straight from Lidl, the type that are grown together in a square cube that you put in water to keep fresh, they received second prize, well done Lidl! Flowers must be from your own garden, again several displays came straight from a florist shop, the flowers I mean rather than the arrangement. I wonder if this sort of thing happens in the UK, I know it didn't used to. I cant see the point in entering any competition if it's not from your own effort.
All in all it was a good day and well worth doing from a financial point of view, no doubt the money will be spent on the garden.
All in all a good result. |
Well Done, both of you. Talk about scoring big. I imagine this be all good fun with a little stress thrown in to make it worthwhile.
ReplyDeleteYour fellow participants must be green with envy.
Yes it is all good fun Lynda and not too stressful, the prices aren't big but they well cover the cost of entry as long as you win.
DeleteWell done, you work hard at it you deserve to win x
ReplyDeleteThanks S.L. I do enjoy the flower classes and also the crafts.
DeleteLovely entries, and such a variety! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteThanks Coco, we grow quite a variety of things, stops us getting bored at meal times.
DeleteWell done, a great result. I can't believe that someone entered a lettuce from Lidl, I've never seen anything like that happen here, though if you get good monetary prizes it probably encourages cheating. Our local show gives a nominal monetary prize, you wouldn't enter for that, it's more for the taking part.
ReplyDeleteI also couldn't believe it Jo, what's the point if you haven't grown it yourself. The prizes aren't big, but they amount up! We also do it for the taking part, it's part of country life as far as we are concerned.
DeleteCongratulations with your first prizes. I agree with you about chaos.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave. I suppose we are getting too old to accept chaos.
DeleteWell done on all your prize winners!
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt, I'm surprised that you didn't take part.
DeleteCongratulations with your prizes, I think it takes a good bit of effort with the presentation, and having so many entries looking well and getting to the show in time, well done.
ReplyDeleteI was at Tinahely show yesterday and I found many show entries to be inspiring, all looked home-grown there. Your flowers are beautiful.
Thanks Kim, yes it does take quite a bit of effort espically this year which has been such a strange growing season. I love my flower gardens, it's my main hobby.
DeleteI find it hard to understand why anyone would cheat at an event like that. There must be some pretty "sad" people about. Well done on your genuine success though!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark, we also cant understand why people would cheat either, in the case of the lettuce, Lidl sell three plugs of lettuce normal price 99cents, but a week ago they were on offer for just 39cent, they are the lolla rossa and oakleaf type, with the flowers they must have cost as much as the first prise money, so makes even less sense.
